He's a line keeper, and thus somewhat incomplete. This is partly dictated by his height, but he very rarely comes for balls in the air, and when he does it's not always convincing. This was the main reason Mourinho (and, briefly, Ancelotti) preferred Diego Lopez.

He's also surprisingly ordinary with his feet, probably because he began his career before this was prioritized in goalkeepers.

He definitely is a good shot stopper, though even at his best I don't think he was better than Dave or Hugo Lloris are now. What he also had was presence, confidence, and incredibly good footwork. He kept his nerve in big matches well, and his handling is secure.

Lloris would be a perfectly acceptable replacement considering the cash values that would be involved (if De Gea signs a new contract) chuck in Vertonghen as well
