Decent signing if true. Knows the league and manager well so should slot in immediately.

We need a big dominant £#%&!er like him if targets such as Hummels aren't available.

Hang on.

Has Vlaar kicked a ball this season?

Smalling and Jones both played more games than he did last season.

I read, on this thread though, that he had played 32 and 34 games last two seasons... id be shocked if jones/smalling played that last season

Jones 39 last season, Smalling 38.

Vlaar might have played more of Villa we're half decent but they were awful last season defensively with him in the team and 'Concrete Ron' didn't get that nickname for nothing.

He's not good enough.

Utterly pointless, you either add quality or you give the kids a chance.

If any of them can stay fit of course.

As someone has said previously, name 3 top centrebacks we could get in January.

He is marginally better than what we have, but what we have are either constantly injured or for the most part not good enough. It's great McNair has broken through but he is far from the answer.

Someone like Hummels could take months to adjust to the league. Vlaar would slot right in

Nobody, all decent players are usually only available in the summer wait until then.

Is he better than what we have? Nobody was wanting him before his performances at the WC were they? He's been shown up countless times in the PL too. (vP against Vlaar 2 years ago for example)

Not only that he's been injured all season, so the first couple of months would be ones he'd need to sort out fitness wise. He's 30 in February.

This. Defenders need drilling together. They're very young as a unit but they'll improve as they play and train together.

Spend January getting Arturo.

LvG has decided on his stop-gap signing.

Good enough for me.

The only way I'd think it was a worthwhile exercise is if someone (Smalling?) was sold for good money & Vlaar was bought in for peanuts. Otherwise, stop gaps are almost universally shit ideas.

McNair has looked very good in the two games he has played.

Should be given more game time imo. Saying that, he needs a commanding figure next to him - and we don't have a single one of them.

Having the younger players getting games and doing well has been a huge positive but we shouldn't have to rely on them. We need experience in that group a soon as possible. Even our senior international centre backs would benefit greatly.

Heads can drop and shit like Leiscter can happen otherwise.
