Question Great English Managers.

Bit of talk on here about Rooney’s job at Derby. Gerrard and dominating the sack race.

We do have a tendency to overhype English managers, especially if they were great players.

Let’s be honest, there aren’t a lot of truly great English managers over the last few years or even decades. Howard Wilkinson the last English manager to win the league, 30 years ago. And he wasn’t great.

Who was the last truly GREAT English manager? Brian Clough?

How many have we actually produced? It’s not many. Certainly not in the modern era.

Clough stands out more than anyone I can remember, especially as it was in such a relatively short period of time and where he started from

Revie too many questions to answer.

Tony Barton won a European Cup with a team Ron Saunders built

We dodged a bullet in 1980 with the fraud McMenemy

Howard Kendall would have won the EC only for the wall pushers

Heard a terrible story about El Tel. I'll spill some particularly disgusting beans once he dies.

The last truly great English manager: Brian Clough.

Truly great English managers of the modern era: None.

Pre-WW2, there not being any European competitions & England not taking part in the first 3 World Cups, you can't really judge managers of that era.

Post-WW2 up to the 70's, Bill Nicholson is the only name that springs to mind.

Tottenham Hotspur

FA Cup: 1960–61, 1961–62, 1966–67
Football League Cup: 1970–71, 1972–73
FA Charity Shield: 1961, 1962, 1967 (shared)
UEFA Cup: 1971–72, runner up: 1973-74
European Cup Winners' Cup: 1962–63
Anglo-Italian League Cup: 1971

Clough, Robson, Paisley
Revie can have a mention, as can Venables and Hoddle, but they were not greats.
Joe Royle did wonders at Oldham - not a great, but remarkable achievements nonetheless

So in conclusion, not many then and none to emerge from the past 40 years.

So Rooney taking Derby from relegation certainties to certainly relegated isn't actually the achievement his mates in the media would have you believe?
