As many as Ronaldo's, or Rooney's or Cantona's or Lampard's?

:shakehead:

A goal is a goal. It doesn't matter if it goes in off your arse from 6 inches or a 50 yard lob of the keeper from the half-way line. It still goes down as a goal.

i beg to differ.....if a player takes all the pens and free kicks, hes bound to score more goals than his strike partner who doesnt get the constant opportunity at a "free" pop on goal....(granted..he still has to score em ..but still)

both may score, say 15 goals from open play per season...but with the added pens and free kicks, one is considered a legend and the other not....purely because of the additional "extra" chances one player is given.

if Shearers goal tally had been 147 as oppose to 260 because one of his other team mates took the pens and free kicks, would he have been regarded as a...(erhem) [SIZE="1"]legend

I don't subscribe to that opinion. If you have a player who scores 29 out of 30 pens he takes then he's amassive asset. Witness last weekend. He is given the extra chances, and scores from the, because he is skilled at it. Just as a brilliant right winger is given more chances to play, and score etc, than a shit right winger.

Shearer took a mean penalty, nqat

Cole was a better footballer

I feel these things are reflected in their respective goal tallies from penalties and from open play

How many goals scored and trophies won might Shearer have managed at United? He will never know.

Quite. The annoying example closest to home being how many people described Rooney as having a bad season with his poxy 20 goals from open play last year ( in addition to tall the hard work and sacrfifice and team play he did) in the same season that Ronaldo was lauded as having another great season accompanied by personal achievment awards plus debates about how will we replace his goals - his 16 goals from open play plus his 5 from pens and 5 from free kicks of course.

Its bizarre to think that Owen is nearly halfway to that total from last year.

Tad, next you'll be saying that the '08 European Cup should be struck off the list of trophies as it was won on penalties.

Too much Zubrowka, methinks.

There's a skill in taking a free-kick, a skill to taking a pen, just as it is to score from open play - often more so as the pressure associated with that is greater.
