Laws of the game - Handball
Handling the ball Handling the ball involves a deliberate act of a player making contact with the ball with his hand or arm. The referee must take the following into consideration: • the movement of the hand towards the ball (not the ball towards the hand) • the distance between the opponent and the ball (unexpected ball) • the position of the hand does not necessarily mean that there is an infringement • touching the ball with an object held in the hand (clothing, shinguard etc.) counts as an infringement • hitting the ball with a thrown object (boot, shinguard etc.) counts as an infringement Disciplinary sanctions There are circumstances when a caution for unsporting behaviour
is required when a player deliberately handles the ball, e.g. when a player: • deliberately and blatantly handles the ball to prevent an opponent gaining possession • attempts to score a goal by deliberately handling the ball A player is sent off, however, if he prevents a goal or an obvious goalscoring opportunity by deliberately handling the ball. This punishment arises not from the act of the player deliberately handling the ball but from the unacceptable and unfair intervention that prevented a goal being scored. on what interpretation of that law are all the pundits saying that the ref had no option but to book him? it's like that time when they were convinced rvn was offside at the euro championships only to be proved wrong. he didn't need to be booked. he shouldn't have been booked. the ref was over zealous. |

Cautionable Offences
A player is cautioned and shown the yellow card if he commits any of the following seven offences: • unsporting behaviour • dissent by word or action • persistent infringement of the Laws of the Game • delaying the restart of play • failure to respect the required distance when play is restarted with a corner kick, free kick or throw-in • entering or re-entering the fi eld of play without the referee’s permission • deliberately leaving the field of play without the referee’s permission very unsporting behaviour from Ronaldo imo 8 game ban, banged to rights and no mistake |

unsporting behaviour is a catch-all definition that is meant to cover offences not specifically legislated for eg, dean windass trying to £#%&! up the long thorw at stoke.
to use that as an excuse to book ronaldo would have been a cop out, but as far as i know that wasn't the reason cited. |

i thought he'd booked him for deliberate handball. whatever it was for it was harsh. it certainly wasn't any more unsporting than any other infringement that took place during that game.
my point is that the offence is covered by the handball law. there is no need to use the broadly defined unsporting behaviour law to punish him. to do so, or to attempt to retrospectively justify the sending off by doing so is, well, unsporting. if i was to engage in hyperbole it's the footballing equivalent of using anti-terror legislation to chuck a dissenting old man out of a party conference. |

Since he came back he has been a problem waiting to happen.
His head isn't in the right place because of what happened last summer. You only have to look at his attitude. Clapping the referee on Sunday. Giving it the number 1 to the Villa fans last week. Constantly giving it the look of disgust everytime somebody has the temerity to tackle him. Not celebrating his goals when he first came back. Just give the @#%&! what he wants and sell him next summer. |

You keep analysing his attitude if you wish. I'll stick to concentrating on his contribution on the pitch thanks. |

give them exactly what they want, show them that they got to you, add fire to the stereotypical view that you are petulant and arrogant and then play volleyball in the derby and look for excuses i love ronnie to bits but its all starting to get a bit 'Henry'. Always someone elses fault etc. The bit about stuff not coming off for him or passes going astray and him chucking his hands in the air at team mates has been £#%&!ing me off royally he looks less a team player and more an individual as time passes |

It was a yellow as for whatever the reason he deliberately handled it. It was probably to protect his face but he'd clapped the ref earlier and as such had used up any goodwill. Ask yourself if it had been Stevie G who had been sent off, how many would say on here he shouldn't have gone?
I know the first yellow was very harsh but if I was the ref, I'd have 2nd carded him for the clap. |

he's looked a proper team player this season though; his decision-making on the more flowing attacks has been very good. as for the flicks, they've mostly not been coming off for any of the front men most of the season, though people normally just slate Giggs for it. |
