Manchester United Boss Sir Alex Ferguson Monitoring The 'Next Xavi' - Report
The wily Scot has his gaze set of Spain's next big midfield maestro...

The Premier League champions, Manchester United, are scouting Spanish prodigy Javier Matilla, who is heralded as the "next Xavi", according to a report in The Telegraph.

Matilla is a diminutive 21-year-old midfielder who is on the books at Villarreal B in Spain's Segunda Division. His rise to prominence has alerted United boss Sir Alex Ferguson, who is rumoured to be readying a £2.7 million winter window bid in order to win the player's signature.

Matilla has remained coy in the face of the reported interest from England, and is quoted to have said: "I know about the rumours, but they are not rare. The members of Spain's Under-21 team are watched by lots of scouts," he said.

"I am happy with Villarreal and my dream is to be in the first-team squad.

"Nobody has contacted me and my challenge is to work hard every day."

Meanwhile, the Yellow Submarine's board of directors issued the following statement: "We have not received any formal offer, but we know that there are scouts at our matches."

Manchester United have also been linked with bids for Mouscron's Maxime Lestienne (The Sun), a gifted teenage winger from Belgium, Jack Rodwell (The Times), an apparent successor to roaming centre back Rio Ferdinand, and Benfica attacker Angel di Maria (the Guardian), who tore Everton's defence apart in the Europa League earlier in the season.
The names in this article seem far more likely, United type, signings than those bandied round in the summer, but still...
