Why don't Scholes, Giggs, Terry, Fabregas and Gerrard get into your value XI if it's about how much they cost their clubs?

It's just a question of odds, isn't it?

Spotting and nurturing talent at a young age is such a crapshoot that chances are, no single club, no matter how good their scouting and youth setup, is again going to produce multiple players of the Giggs/Scholes calibre (none of the players in your XI are likely to turn out nearly as good). So they'll have to spend big to get someone else's, most likely from smaller clubs who can't afford to keep their brightest talents.

If there were not such huge financial disparity between the big clubs and the rest, you'd see this talent staying at their boyhood clubs longer, and those teams genuinely competing for titles. That's the way it works in, for instance, Argentina.

i imagine you were pretty pleased with yourself when you typed that

and when you did everything else you've done today

since you ask btw, i can reveal that it was mainly because i didn't pick them

yes and no. giggs and scholes came through a long time ago and there's a fair few talented players on the verge at united atm. Giggs and Scholes only came together before playing together in the first team a few times anyway, they weren't really part of the same group. giggs was too good to be held in abeyance.

only 4 of those players in that XI i picked are shining for the the team that 'discovered' them.

agree completely about the disparity, of course. sadly most supporters don't give a £#%&! about that.
