The guy was playing non-league 2yrs ago

Yet again England management pick a player based upon his club..

SAF has put his faith in Smalling by buying him so as a knee-jerk the England manager picks him

Maybe Fabio should give up his wage and let a committee of PL managers pick the team...

smalling has impressed me every time he's played for us and let's be honest, who else is he going to call up? lescott?

anyway, smalling has been a regular for england u-21s and has stood out for them. it's a friendly, no point in calling up over the hill shite, better to have a look at some young prospects imo.

International friendlies are a weird one.

Outside of actual tournaments, often they're the only time you will come up against a good side. The qualifiers more often than not are an utter joke.

I'm not sure they're best used to try out youngsters tbh. Quality* international sides should be able to introduce players in the actual qualifying stages.

* Not that England are, so a bit of a moot point.

I'm not criticising Smalling to be fair, more the fact that Capello has called him up as he plays for us...

If he was still playing in the 3rd division or wherever (which in all fairness he could still be doing)

Would he have called him up??

I could manage England if I picked players based on club-managers assessments...

I think he is stealing a wage tbh
