Default Improving the squad

All those games with such a paper thin squad really caught up on us. Priority is to move out players to create some space and free up weekly wages and then buy wisely.

Romero, Jones, Lingard, Mata, De Gea, and any of those on loan (maybe), Matic (maybe) Martial (maybe) Bailly (maybe) James (maybe). Doubt we'll get more than 3 or 4 in so it's still going to be a bit light.

We need some established players in their mid to late 20s to provide support for the young talent.

We need instant upgrades at CM and CB and some sort of forward.

This is the summer to invest and build with 3 or 4 top players.

We’ll make one big signing and maybe one or two shit ones. We know how this goes by now.

We need a lot more than the 2 or 3 that keeps being suggested. It's going to be another tedious summer, our rivals will move quick, we'll drag our feet, and go into next season hoping some kids from our youth teams can step up.

2 or 3 top players to go straight into the 11.

We’ll probably get 2 or 3 in total, but it’ll be one big-ish player* and a couple of Pelestris.

*signed on deadline day and it’ll take a month to get them up to speed.

This is the critical moment.

We need to buy players better than those in the first team and move the equivalent down the pecking order. Fred should not be starting in a first XI, Lindelof probably shouldn't, Pogba shouldn't and De Gea definitely should'nt be starting...

The 'almost' teams don't make these big decisions and move current first team players out, they buy for the periphery and hope it improves...

This this this.

Any failures that stem from players we KNOW are failures are on the management.

De Gea is a fanny. As is Lindelof. Bailly is insane and reckless. Pogba is a talented square peg. Mata, James don’t influence games enough.

We knew all of these things before last night. We have countless examples of it for years, in some cases, and yet we fall foul of it again.

If we continue with it just hoping it’ll get better, then more fool us.

Absolute bare minimum we need another 3:

Centre back
Midfielder
Attacker (preferably someone who can play both wide left and wide right comfortably).

I'd take Ruben Neves all day long for the midfield. He's comfortable sitting in midfield and he's technically great on the ball. He's not had the best season, but Wolves have had a shitter of a season while not playing in a way that compliments him. Having a midfielder that is comfortable playing deeper with the ability to play pinpoint balls to break defences is exactly what we are missing imo.

No idea who we could get upfront or at the back tbh.

We should be able to see the back of De Gea, Romero, Grant, Mata, Matic straight off the bat, which should free some a fair bit of cash in transfers and wages. Hopefully we can also get shot of returning shite like Pereira and Lingard (am I missing out any other loanee dross?).

Hopefully we can get a decent offer for Martial and see him off as well, and if we can get two midfielders in then hopefully we can cash in on Pogba too. I'd also happily sell Fred and replace his presence on the bench with youth like Garner for the time being.

Even then we'd still be a little light on the bench in terms of quality, but our strongest 11 would be improved quite considerably. Although the goalkeeper spot would be something that needs to be nailed down next season. An inconsitent season from Henderson would undo some of the work done in the summer (if any is actually done).

tldr: We need players, and we need to sell players.

I think we have come to something a cross road

Invest in the team this summer and we continue to improve build on the momentum of a decent ( no more no less ) season and get over the line in nights like last night

Do the bare minimum in the summer and this team will regress quickly

Sadly I think i know which way the owners will go

David De Gea - sell if anyone will have him
Dean Henderson - give him a year to prove himself/learn under Tom Heaton
Sergio Romero - let his contract expire
Lee Grant - hold up the subs board

Aaron Wan-Bissaka - keep
Brandon Williams - loan
Luke Shaw - keep
Alex Telles - keep
Harry Maguire - keep
Victor Lindelof - make up the numbers
Eric Bailly - sell if anyone will have him
Axel Tuanzebe - make up the numbers
Phil Jones -
Nemanja Matic - Roma
Paul Pogba - last year of his deal, get whatever we can for him

Donny van de Beek - keep if there's any intention of playing him
Scott The Scottish Player - squad player
Fred - make up the number
Bruno Fernandes - keep
Juan Mata - contract up, let him go to next year's Europa League winners
Mason Greenwood - keep
Amad Diallo - keep
Marcus Rashford - six month sabatical
Daniel James - make up the numbers
Anthony Martial - sell, if anybody will have him
Edinson Cavani - keep

Diogo Dalot - sell
Andreas Pereira - sell
Tahith Chong - sell
Jesse Lingard - sell

That leaves us with

GK: Henderson
RB: Wan-Bissaka
CB: Maguire
CB: Lindelof
CB: Tuanzebe
LB: Shaw
LB: Telles
CM: Fred
CM: The Scottish Player
AM: Van De Beek
AM: Fernandes
RW/ST: Greenwood
RW: Diallo
LW: Rashford
LW/RW: James
ST: Cavani

I thought I was feeling pessimistic before I wrote that out. If Tom Heaton is done, then we need a RB, CB, 2 in midfield (if Pogba goes) and a forward. Although I'm pretty sure we'll start the season with De Gea, Matic, Bailly, Pogba and Martial in the squad.

I think Sancho will be the priority.

My prediction for the summer window, based on nothing but guesswork and the feeling it can't go as badly as last year.

5 hot scarfs on the first day back after the Euros:

Heaton, Trippier, Botman, Brozovic and Sancho.

I don't really like football, so I don't know if any of them are any good. But 3 of them won league titles this season, and on that basis it should be enough to win us the league next season. As long as we get Graham Potter in as well.

Needed- RW, Striker, DM, CB, CM... Maybe even a LW...

Sell Dave, Pogba, Martial, Lingard, Matic, Mata, Bailey, Jones.

We’ll sell a couple and bring in one or two

Lingard, Pereira and Dalot will come back and Ole will claim “they’re like new signings”

All of this is pretty much my feeling on it all season, and for much of the last 3 tbh.

agree with all that, except the unnecessary Graham Potter snide.

Mata and Matic will leave. I'm not that arsed about Fred, Lindelof, Tuanzers, James and McT, as long as they are squad options. Would like to see more game time for Beek and Amad.

Key will be getting some money for De Gea, Pogba and Martial - these are our key assets.

Got a feeling Ole disagrees though.

I want Ole to get another widow and potentially another season, but he needs to be ruthless this summer and get rid of the three above and use the money wisely.

If the scousers sign Tielemens & Konate they'll push City again, this time next year we'll still be arguing about Pogba, Rashford, Lindelof, Fred..
