Robson for me - carried United for years on his own and could do everything -

To three FA Cup finals. He was my hero as a kid, nqat but injuries and his lack of achievement really spoils it for him. Especially when putting him up against Beckham or Scholes.

Said it on the other thread but I think Becks’ leadership qualities really elevated him as a player as he progressed in his career. Scholes is probably the most technically gifted midfielder I’ve seen in my lifetime, there really wasn’t a thing he couldn’t do; it’s just a shame Cantona taught him how to tackle.

Esters made a good point, we did miss Scholes a lot when he wasn’t in the team, but later on I’d argue that’s a sign of the decline in quality of the team as a whole. When Becks left we brought in Ronaldo and had such quality across the whole team we recovered well from the loss; his last season he wasn’t all there anyway, in hindsight it was the right time to part ways (kid me will never forgive adult me for saying that).

So it's not possible to have a favourite player but realise a different player is better?

Possibly. Unless you’re answering a question about who you think our best player is.

Couldn't you just have said 'Beckham'? Really didn't need all the extra guff and would have saved us all some valuable time tbh.

Think on in future.

Must also factor in...he wasn’t playing in a team as good as the one scholes did, and the pitches were usually very poor so passing wasn’t as accurate

His best teams surely weren't that far off.

But as others have already asked - was he, strictly speaking, a midfielder?

I saw him play a couple of times post 68, but mainly early seventies

No united team of that era would hold a candle to the best teams of the Ferguson era

Yeah, but this is a bit like the "best ever chess player" debate. Football has moved on, so of course even the best 1960s teams look a bit primitive now.

But who seriously doubts - for instance - that the "holy trinity" would have smashed it in any era, including now?
