.....the bloke is one of the great football managers. Beckenbauer never praises anybody but the best.

He was effectively sacked by England. Which says it all.

I'd like to apologise for calling him names during the build up to Mexico 86 and Italy 4 years later.

He was almost the reverse of SGE in that our qualifications and build ups were often traumatic but we nearly always punched above our weight in the actual finals.

Euro 88 aside.

Thumbs up

someone said the other day but he even took the Barcodes into the Champions League.

Think about that for a moment. Barcodes in the Champion's League!!!!

Always behaved with dignity, gets on well with SAF, did the best performance of an English manager in a non English tournament.

That Ipswich team when I was a kid was bloody good too.

Success overseas at club level too - what a bloke.

Somebody once said "With Robson in charge at England we were actually quite good, the problem was that nobody noticed"... says it all really.

The press hounded him relentlessly.

It was very touching. Especially as such a confident man seemed quite fraught and fragile

One of the true gentleman of the game.

Very moving and genuine tribute.

Great guy, a true gentleman and a class act, and thats even before you list his many achievements as a player and manager of fine attacking sides.

A top man and a top moment. It appears he won't be around for much longer so it was a nice touch to give him this award. Very moving.

I still say he cost us the 1990 World Cup though.

Bloody hell, no snide remarks at all on here or Fred Tissue on the man, i'm impressed. Says it all about him and even as recently as '03 he had the Newcastle side (Bramble, Dyer, Ameobi et al) challenging for the title right up until we demolished them at St.James' in April.

Great manager, great man.
