It is part of BT's wider competition with Sky, Virgin etc. They are attracting more customers to their products through sport. BT make ridiculous profits, and they keep increasing.

Presumably because it's more aesthetically pleasing and less hassle than hooking up your laptop to the TV every saturday, but the software in question can just as easily be installed on a PC, phone or tablet (iOS devices must be jailbroken).

I binned sky last year and used streams + hdmi cable to watch every game.

I'm sure there's way to record streams onto your laptop but I have no need for this.
