He was outstanding for Utd but his detractors will look at his performances in Europe and hold that against him. That is harsh as the team during this time were not ready to perform in Europe, naive defensively and weak depth in the squad.

Bergkamp was outstanding at Ajax, at a time when the Dutch league was still a strong force in European football, he failed in Italy which is a mark against him but the move to Arsenal was a good one for both parties. He had a similar impact to Cantona on a smaller scale and was a key part of of the best Arsenal teams in their history. He also showed excellent longevity to maintain his standards in his mid 30's. The standard of the PL was also improving year after year from the mid 90's.

Their international performances come down heavily in Bergkamp's favour, the goal ratios may be similar but Bergkamp performed in international tournaments and was the Dutch top scorer when he retired.

Cantona was brilliant for Utd but weigh up everything over their careers and it is hard for me to put Cantona above Bergkamp.
So in other words, Bergkamp's failures can be quickly skated over but Cantona's blown up and highlighted.
