He's never spent more than £1m on a player.

It's gospel.

He's also excellent at developing and getting the best out of young talent.

Like David Bentley.

He also exercises superb judgement when looking into the off-field potential of perspective transfers.

Like record signing Jose Antonio Reyes.

I'm just amazed that he plucked Fabregas and Vieira from the little known, obscure clubs they were both at.

'Discovering' these two, in the footballing obscurity of Barca and Milan, was truly miraculous.

Well done Arsene.

we should have a bit perspective when knocking wenger.

Lets stay true to facts and then mock/criticize him. He hasn't spent that much money always. Their highest ever record signings is still wiltord for 11m even though opposition fans want it to be reyes for 17m. They never paid that as it was all part of bonuses. they paid £10m acc to one of their websites.

They couldn't have spent £30m on defender like Rio in their dreams.

The difference is that Fergie is, even today after United's recent re-emergence at the very pinnacle of English football, regularly criticised by the media for those mistakes (mistakes which, Veron aside, were not particularly costly in pecuniary terms). Wenger's transfer market acumen and youth development skills are, on the other hand, generally praised to high heavens at every opportunity. Only after three trophy-less seasons has some criticism of his policies started to emerge. In fact, if anything Wenger gets more stick from Arsenal fans than he does from the press FFS.

They signed Sol Campbell (then rated at the same fee as Rio) on a Bosman.

His genius for picking up a bargain then saw the acquisition of Pascal Cygon.

The difference being serenity, arsenal don't go and spend £50m on a title winning side. We do and hence people expect success of us as a formality.

Where as wenger has a net profit in transfers. He picks up a lumbering henry from Juve and makes him world class, then picks up 16m for him. Same with overmars, viera, pires, petit...

Why do you think chelsea don't get enough credit?

People say how can wenger get credit for developing fabregas. why not? he identified him at barcelona's youth club. why didn't any other clubs do?

People after arsenal game on here were saying how good hleb was and if they were willing to sell, we should be in for him. Do you know how much he cost? Didn't any of the other clubs realise his potential when stuttgart? know what, not many did. Wenger did and he has another very good player on his hands for less than £10m.

Fergie always gets credit for vidic and evra. Either you don't read the papers that have given credit or you purposely overlook them.

Wenger may not be as good a motivator as fergie and will 'never' come close to his trophy numbers.

But given what he had to work with and resources, I am bloody sure he has "exceeded" expectations. Their own and medias.

How long is that excuse going to be trotted out though? The media still fawn over him bringing out Viera, Henry et al as examples. That was how long ago? Means nothing to me. We may as well keep mentioning the £1million spent on Eric, the fee for the Dane. They're of little relevance to how his side has performed and how he has strengthened in the last few years. He has the money - they have a lot of money should he choose to spend it - but he hasn't. Why? Bottle always springs to mind to me. I don't think he has it anymore.

Utd spend big because Fergie is prepared to take a risk, to put his head on the chopping block. We have committed an awful lot of money for two kids, I don't think there's many other clubs in the world who would have taken that gamble.

Anyhoo, I couldn't give a £#%&! what he does and who he spends it on this Summer. He'll still turn any decent player into a @#%&!. The fact that 2/3 of his important players are also eyeing up moves abroad is great news. Although we'll have another 12months of young team %@#$&!s, transition etc etc.
