This kid is now a world star, we don't sign players like that, nobody in England have ever signed big players like the Spanish or Italians do just forget about it.

Also worth noting that up to last year Madrid and Barca were earning around £70 million a year more in TV money, even with the massively improved Premier league deal they earn around £30million a year more, although there are talks to get them to share more equitably with the other clubs.

True though. We had to get him before he left Porto, or before he got to
Porto.

Ronaldo is on 17m Euros a year, which is what Rodriguez will be after pretty soon. That's after tax.

As if United would ever compete with that.

Yet when it comes to signing the very best of the world's established top players we never seem to be able to get them. We should be looking to sign Messi, bring Ronaldo back or get in Rodriguez, yet we just know that they won't come.

Is money the major issue here, or is it lifestyle I wonder (do South Americans/continental players really want to live in the north west of England when they can enjoy their millions in the heat of Spain) ?
Manchester City are signing the likes of Aguero & Yaya Toure. Ibrahimovic plays for PSG. James Rodriguez currently plays for £#%&!ing Monaco; I think this shows you just how far top players put 'global support' in their list of things they give a £#%&! about.

The top players couldn't give a flying £#%&! how many shirts United flog in Malaysia or our wonderful new washing detergent sponsorship in China.

When it comes to securing the services of the absolute top pedigree players they want to know there's a £#%&!ing good chance of winning european cups and championships, of earning an absolute £#%&!ing mint and playing alongside players they see as equal or even better than themselves.

At the moment there's about 4-5 clubs who are far more attractive to a player like Rodriguez. We're still dusting ourselves down and picking ourselves up after a season that did a lot of damage to us. That's without taking into account the transfer fee which United would never pay in a million £#%&!ing years.

If more of the world's top players came from Ireland, Britain or the Scandinavian countries we might have a chance of signing them. Unfortunately they're all South American or from the Iberian Peninsula...or German...and they see the likes of Real Madrid and Barcelona as the ultimate. The clubs where all the best players want to play.

That's just the way it is.

Pretty soon they're going to have to. Either we compete or our fickle fan base will disappear faster than you can lose a 100 million shirt sponsorship deal.

Yes they should do. But Real Madrid spend whatever they like and are answerable to nobody. They get bailed out by their own government ffs.

United have horrendous debt and operate as a business first and foremost. Real Madrid have no time for such trivial %@#$&!s as balance sheets and net spends. They know they'll never go bust or be held accountable for anything they spend. They are untouchable.

Future stars from the Far East , USA Africa will probably go premier league first.

In terms of chances to win big trophies we are (once again) certainly an extremely attractive option: the world and his dog knows LVG is a top top manager and surely being part of a new era is an extremely attractive proposition. And in terms of sponsorship deals and potential earnings outside of a basic wage, I'd say playing for the world's most supported club will surely be worth millions to the player (and his agent). So it comes down to wages and lifestyle IMHO; Spain offers the closest thing to South America in Europe and if the pay packet offered is exactly the same, and chances for regular first team football are even (another factor), the lifestyle factor will surely sway almost any South American towards Barca or Madrid.

Would be nice if United could actually produce a couple of world class English players of our own for the first time in 20 years, considering that's apparently what our ethos is

There's not a single player at United I wouldn't happily £#%&! off to bring this wonderful obscenity to OT tbh. Would love to see this sort of nonsense at United on the regular:

Two or three seasons tearing it up at United before moving for a world record fee? I'd take that tbh.
