Default 108 cats missing in Ipswich area

Quote:

But Ipswich residents are now living in fear that a mass cat killer is on the loose after reports that more than a hundred pets have mysteriously disappeared without a trace.

Police said they are investigating the matter, which has caused distress among cat-owners, many of whom now refuse to let their pets go out at night for fear they will be attacked.

Of the 108 cats to have gone missing in Ipswich and the neighbouring town of Stowmarket since the beginning of the year, only two have returned. They limped home after being tortured and one was so badly hurt it had to be put down.

Louise Catchpole, a mother-of-two from Ipswich, described what happened to her two cats, Nigella and Rupert, who went missing last week.

“One returned home on Monday but he was covered in faeces, his whiskers had been burned and his fur was pulled out,” she said.

“He had been tortured.”

“My other cat had been dumped in Gippeswyk Park and a passer-by handed her into the vet on Wednesday afternoon.

“When I went to collect her, a woman in the vet told me another cat had been found in that same park, tortured.”

Ms Catchpole said she was shocked when she discovered the scale of the problem, adding that she would not let her cars out again until the culprit has been found.

“I think there is someone who is very, very sick and they are doing this for some kinds of fun. Whoever is behind this needs psychiatric help.”

A sister Facebook group called "Stowmarket Missing Cats" has been created so that cat owners can share stories and attempt to solve the mystery of the lost pets.

Ben Gummer, MP for Ipswich said he was “alarmed” at the scale of the problem.

He said: “I am alarmed at the news that over one hundred cats have gone missing in my constituency in such a short space of time.

“If it is found that an individual is responsible, I obviously hope that the police catch him or her soon.”

Ipswich mayor Bill Quinton added: "I share the devastation any cat owner feels when their much-loved pet goes missing or is injured or killed.

"I hope there is no pattern behind this - certainly, we have not experienced any increase in reports to the council.”

Sgt Mark Thomas from Ipswich South East Safer Neighbourhood Team said: “Police have been made aware of allegedly stolen or mistreated cats in the Ipswich area. The matter is being looked into and officers will establish if any criminal offences have taken place – either a theft or cruelty to animals with the assistance of the RSPCA”.

A spokesman from the RSPCA said: “Our sympathies are with the owners of these cats as it is really upsetting to lose their cats in this way.

"We urge anyone with any evidence of animal welfare offences to call us on 0300 1234 999 and we will do our best to investigate them."
What kinda scum f***ers.. etc..

Fair play - those two just did a runner.

Still 106 cats unaccounted for.

Hard to believe this has only just made the nationals. If these abducted cats were garden gnomes (or small children) it'd be front page stuff.
