I know its probably not the done thing.

But Ruud in his prime should be much much higher than that.

Others may hold bigger parts of your heart, and quite rightly so, but Ruud was one of the very best on the planet at what he does / did, the fact he slowed us down and seemingly there was a big ego in play too should not shroud that fact.

You could do one of shite players.

McClair
Forland
Bellion
Dublin (had he not broken his leg, would we have won the league?)
Yorke (no, you £#%&! off. He was not worth £12.6M)

I'm sure I've missed off loads.

If it's not based on sentimentality and ranking them as they were in their prime:

1. van Nistelrooy
2. Cantona
3. Rooney
4. Cole
5. Yorke
6. Solskjaer
7. Hughes
8. Sheringham

I know. I did actually write out why I had put them in that order but thought it would give more scope for discussion if I didnt.
What I was thinking was not who had achieved the most, be it in medals or goals/games ratio but who embraced and fitted into the United way, aswel as adding another dimension to it.
That is why Cantona is top of the list. His individual skill, his influence in the team that year and his subsequent legacy
Hughes was £#%&!ing ace. Nuff said
van Nistelrooy is where he is because he wasnt really a 'United Striker'.
The emphasis seemed always to be about him. Maybe it wasnt his creation but it seemed he was the focal point. You only had to look at a 10 game spell when he was injured and the side started playing free-flowing football again.
Goals became spread throughout the side again, something which was lacking when he was in the side. He scored few spectacular goals a la Hughes but was always in the right place at the right time to poach goals.

To be fair to Fergie: of all the positions on the pitch, he normally does best with buying strikers. That is £#%&!ing impressive list, there's no doubt about that, as he would say.

Average and dud midfielders and defenders, some comedy goalkeepers but strikers very rarely. Bellion is just a bizarre aberation - like the entire coaching staff were tripping that weekend.

You should have seen him play then. If we needed someone to take the game by the scruff of the neck and nick us a goal, he'd balloon the ball over an open goal every time. He could not be relied upon and it's no coincidence that things "clicked" when we £#%&!ed that #@&%! off.

Given that United won the Treble in his first season, I'd say that £12.6m was money well spent.

£12.6m was a bargain. Double it every decade? £25m in today's climate. I bet you wish Fergie could have spent that little and brought in a player to compliment a player we already have so well, winning the Champions League in the first year. Retaining the Premier League in his next two seasons.
