It's always about players first and foremost. They're the ones on the pitch. As Guardiola said when he was at Bayern, you can create a great team without a great manager - you can't do it without great players. United for the last five years have not had great players. The standard of player is better now than it has been at any stage since Fergie left, but there's still a way to go.

And it's still clearly a concern that the most talented in our squad are not the best performers. That reflects on the coach.

I didn’t mention attractive football. Anyone can play attractive football, not everyone can do it and win things which is the requirement at united. And without almost immediate success, the manager doesn’t get to stay around. You need a solid foundation at the back. United don’t have it.

Attacking football is a myth anyway. Balanced football is what united’s most attractive teams had under Fergie. Fergie usually went mad when his teams went too attacking and neglected defensive responsibilities. Think it was the start of the 2006 season, or around then, as a case in point.

We’ve said the same with the previous managers. Looking for the magic bullet. The problems run deep at united. It will take anyone time to sort out.

In terms of the club’s structure and where they wanted to get to, yes.

It’s a reflection on both.

Signing players who make a bit of a sacrifice to join united would help, rather than chucking so much money at them they can’t say no. I suspect if today’s united were competing with Blackburn for keane’s or shearer’s signature they’d just double Blackburn’s offer.

For once I agree with you. It’s going to be another shite season with our two biggest rivals going for the title.
