Gary Lineker - joined Everton when they were champions and Cup Winners Cup holders - scores a bagful and Everton win nothing - leaves for Barca and Everton champions again the following season.
Ian Wright - Arsenal champions when he joins - breaks their goalscoring record in the 6 or 7 seasons he was there but never really competed for the title - and they become champions again when he is replaced by Anelka.
Ruud joins Utd who had been champions for 3 successive seasons - he scores a bagful in his 5 seasons and wins one league - leaves and they are champions 3 seasons in a row.
Even going back to Jimmy Greaves - joins the double winners and Spurs never really competed for the title again whilst he filled his boots.

Robbie Fowler, Michael Owen, Karl-Heinz Riedle - 3 of the greatest forwards in Premiership History. No championships at Liverpool.

Alan Shearer - Newcastle runners up in '96, £#%&! all after he joined.

Shaun Goater - zip

I've often pondered this. I said the same when Shearer joined Newcastle. They were already high scorers and you can only score so many goals ( not a scientific fact but you know what I mean).
I think it probably comes down to relying more on one person and if the theyhave an off day there's less chance of goals coming from elsewhere. Whereas if you have goals from all round the team, one player having an off day is less significant.

Luis Aragonés dropping Raúl from the Spain side in order to make the big leap forward was a similar case. The team had to come first, particularly as their type of game so much relies on the team ethic.

My God he got some stick for it too

Always got the impression he was never loved as much by United fans as he should have been.

Even @#%&!s like Keane seem to be remembered with more affection than Ruud, who just seemed to be seen as a machine than scored goals.

Best genuine striker I've seen at United in 30 years, although I'm sure I'm forgetting some.

Bit harsh on Ruud tbh.

Arsenal upped their game between 2001-2004 so finishing behind them a couple of times was no disgrace. Henry, Vieira, Campbell, Pires, Ljungberg etc. They were a very, very good side.

And then the whole Chelsea thing started with them blowing everybody out of the water as far as transfers were concerned. Plus Mourinho came in and took advantage of what appeared to be waning enthusiasm from Fergie. Nicked a couple of titles fair enough, but didn't half stoke up some fire in the fantastic auld £#%&!er

Also regarding us winning the league 3 years straight after he'd gone:
- Ronnie matured into a world class footballer
- Giggsy and Scholesy both enjoyed renaissances in their careers having looked to both be waning previously
- We brought in Michael Carrick to play in midfield rather than Alan £#%&!ing Smith
- Signed Vidic and Evra in Jan 06 to replace Silvestre and Heinze. Both became world class defenders in their time with us
- Van Der Sar played some of the best football of his career at that time

Ruud was just in the wrong place at the wrong time imo

After leaving us he admitted that Fergie had mostly been in the right. Quite notable how often that happened.

Wouldn't find Keano at that He was right at the time though.

As for Ruud, guy was disgustingly good. Love him. Still devastated over that penalty against Arsenal I am

Can throw Falcao in there. Atletico finished 5th and 3rd in his two seasons and never in the Champions League. They won Europa but that's a bit meh.

Falcao leaves and they become league champions and CL runners up and they were only a minute off from doing the unthinkable tbf.

Falcao joins the champions of England this season and now they're languishing close to the relegation zone

Not so much coincidental as incidental - many other factors played into results.

Look the goalscoring records in title-winning seasons of the likes of Teddy, Shearer, Henry, Yorke, Cole, Ronaldo, Drogba, Berbatov, RVP, Aguero, and of course Ruud, for some balance.

Was it Charlton when he scored, ran to our lot in the away end and a steward got her bottom poked mid goon?
