Default Why do you support United

Not to turn this into an OOT'er debate, but just wondered how people ended up supporting and following United, weather from close by or from further afield?

Lads from abroad, down south, and north of the boarder who follow United always amaze me. As I don't know how some of you do it, what with all the travelling and expense etc, it's some going to be honest.

Me, all of my family being reds, I live about 3 miles from the ground, local club and all that. On the day I was born, my old fella took a detour on the way home from Hope Hospital, to go and hold me up to Old Trafford So wasn't really much choice in the matter, although there would only ever have been one choice.

My Dad is a sweaty sock. We moved to Mancunia when I was 4, 28 years ago
why are you all laughing?
He used to take me to OT one week and Maine road the next, when I was about 6

I was gobsmacked when I first set foot in Mecca. End off.

Yours

Magnum xx

Family more or less - dad, uncle, grandad, all matchgoers in their day.

I say more or less because it doesn't always come down to family, a couple of mates hail from blue families. United were also playing the first game I remember seeing live on telly. I also remember it was against the skaus, and the fact for some inexplicable reason I hated them already

it's difficult to pin down if you've just 'grown up' with them. that sounds a bit top red-ish I mean there was never a point where I thought 'I'll start supporting united'.

I probably started following them in the early 80's, me dad was a red and a Altrincham supporter, they just we're the team to support even though the scouser's we're winning everything.

I'm from Norn Irn and all the best players in our history have been Utd. That and the fact my Da would have thrown me out of the house had I supported anyone else.

Earliest memory is crying after 1976 FA Cup final defeat to Southampton, goal was 3 yards offside ffs.

Dad moved to Manchester from Glasgow in the 60s, worked in Trafford Park and despite not being a big football fan he used to go to OT with his colleagues.

We moved about a bit when I was a kid but Manchester always felt like home. Sounds daft now but supporting Utd felt a bit alternative when the scousers were on our perch.

Dad took me to a few matches in the early 80s, one of which was Barcelona in '84. I was 11. No one could have gone to that game and not become a life-long red.

The smell of horseshit and hamburgers leaves a lasting impression on
an eight year old, apart from that the whole match day experience in the 70s
at Old Trafford was something to behold.
