Default Carrick confirms his retirement

Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick has announced he will retire at the end of the season.

Carrick, 36, has played 463 times for United since joining from Tottenham for £18m in 2006 and won 34 England caps.

"There comes a time when your body tells you it is time to stop. That is where I am at," he said.

Carrick added it was "looking likely" that he will take up the club's offer of a first-team coaching role at the end of the season.

12 years at United, a decade as first choice.

Only good enough to get 34 caps for England though. About half as many as James Milner.

Utterly ludicrous. How many did Gareth Barry and Scott Parker get?

Absolutely wonderful player.

Barry obviously just the 19 caps more than Cazza. So he's a fair bit better, just not as better as Milner.

Henderson (27) already has more caps than Carrick got during his career. England have simply been blessed in that department

First choice during our most successful ever period. England £#%&!ed up with him and Scholes. We didn't

A worthy replacement for Keano. Best passer of the ball in England by a mile.

Last remnant and key cog of probably our greatest ever side, which if Barca had not come along would be mentioned up there with some of the best clubs sides ever.

Not good enough for England though. Carrick and Scholes's England careers are a travesty.

I used to call him that, and mean it. That was some time ago, though.

people view fergie's last season as "the van persie season" but carrick was just as important in winning that title.
