Up to the last few games he has played I would not have thought he had a future at Utd. However he has shown some abilities that we had not seen previously. His passing from deep the most impressive, whipping accurate, and early, early passes through the lines to the feet of the forwards. A pity Lukaku has been on the end of them because a more technically capable forward would be making more of them. That type of passing has been absent from that area of the team since Carrick retired. Not suggesting that he will end up close to Carrick's level but it was a pleasant surprise after watching Matic take so long to release the ball. Might just be a couple of good games of course.

Will have to improve his touch and left foot, defensive reading of the game but he looked more of a natural in that deepest role than higher up.

See him as a Fletcher type player. Fletch took a lot of shit but established himself. You need utility / grafting players in any team, they give the luxury players license to have an off day. Hargreaves was a classic example - sadly the injuries £#%&!ed up his career.

He's got a solid attitude and not the type to get bullied. Definitely deserves to be at the club..

Hope we see a lot more of him this season as I think he gives us a lot more mobility than what Matic offers.

We can also see if it’s just a purple patch or he could actually be useful as a first team player. Would mean that we could get by with just one midfield signing in the summer too freeing up cash for other positions.

Abysmal so far today. Longstaff and Rice far better prospects imo.

At best he's a squad player. He's not to blame for this.

He's average as £#%&!. Not sure what the fuss is about.

Unbelievably cowardly as well, always looks to make a backwards pass first.

Southampton were romping through our midfield with absolutely no opposition today.

What exactly is McAverage's job?

He’s doing a job while others are injured but let’s be honest he’s just bang average

Wouldn’t have got near the Southampton midfield today so not sure why long term anyone thinks he’s good enough for us
