Unfortunately for me ...... I watched it, well about 75 minutes, I put the Scotland match on and was shocked they were trying really hard, showing maximum determination and passion for their country. Watching England is like watching walk football, it is so slllloooooooooowwwwwww. I lost count of the times we were near their box and we then passed it right back to Hart, who shouldn't be anywhere near the squad. Only Rashford put in a performance, the rest were garbage, Sterling, the Ox, Dire spelt correctly, so glad we got Matic and not this slug. Henderson always tries hard, but he's just shit at this level, no one got more than 5/10 apart from Rashford. Unless we speed up, teams will just pick our average defence off and I see another Iceland Iceberg ahead in the finals.

Midfield is a wasteland, it is why you still have some people with the delusional hope that Wilshere will somehow turn his career around.

It is the weakest midfield generation I can remember, Henderson, Drinkwater, Livermore, Dier, all one dimensional grafters with little in the way of passing ability.

Haven’t watched an England game in years. Really couldn’t be arsed if they make major tournaments or not. When was the last time we weren’t embarrasing? And that Great Escape song...

The midfield is like a huge ball and chain holding this team back

England when everyone is fit have the best attacking options they've had in years
Full back area is pretty strong and centre back isn't great but isn't terrible either

Really is coming to something when Shelvey or Wilshere would greatly improve that England midfield

Can't think of any potential high quality centre midfield players coming through either

Hard to believe Jose's first choice CM this summer was Dier
He looks like a defender playing in midfield which is basically what he is

Is that in part because of how the role has changed? It used to demand multi faceted players, box to box, capable on attack and defensively.

More limited and functional role these days, sit, be disciplined, take few risks on the ball, give it to the attackers. Not the most exciting role to play, every talented kid wants to be a 10, or a wide forward scoring goals.

England barely have a play-making option, not just in midfield, the front players have all been used to playing with decisions makers, Miki/Mata at Utd, Coutinho, Dembele/Eriksen. Who is the creative brain within that England group? Speaks volumes that Lallana is such a key miss.

Henderson should be the greatest player in the world based on this.

Having a replica alongside exacerbates the problem though. Either of Dier or Henderson would probably do fairly well with the right partner. Could just concentrate on that basic hard working job, pair them and it is a nightmare.

It’s always something though, isn’t it? Even when we had a midfield of Beckham, Scholes, Gerrard and Lampard we were still shit. England are the Stoke of international football.
