Thanks for that EP Thompson.

An example of how the west cant do right for doing wrong. You would agree, at least, that whatever the reasons behind the abolition it was the right thing to do and resulyed in immense good?

Yes, that was a big driver behind Brexit, and Trump, and (in an only slightly different way) Corbyn.

But please also note - it *wasn't* "the left", or "socialism".

Indeed it was the right thing. Well done all concerned for not continuing to be a slavers. Pats on the back all round.

Thing is - the slave trade was such a big thing - that went on for centuries. It was the most extreme form of racism. I can see why black people from any country who know some world history, while not necessarily being directly upset (triggered) by language and stereo types from that era being used today, might see it as providing a background/baseline that enables actual racists to ply their crap. Whether the racist is using the exact same language with a racist intent or he feels if people say that then he can say or do this much worse thing.

Anyhow - reckon that's me done. Good day, sir.

Now, you must try to understand this simple concept, recognising that the abolition of slavery and the active suppression of it by the British empire was good isn't to say that I approve of everything that the British empire ever did.

That kind of black and white thinking would lead me to say that you think because the British empire was bad, and because the British empire got rid of slavery, that getting rid of slavery was itself bad, and ergo you think that slavery should not have been ended.

That would be idiotic, er cretinous, no no can't say that either, silly? £#%&! it I give up.
Yeah, the british navy, selflessly stopping endless supplies of free labour from reaching its competitors' shores.

Simplistic and lazy. Much like yourself - the descendant of the only person in history to be sacked from being a slave as there wasn't a day's work in him. A bit much to expect anything more from Morrisey Jnr ova heah who's current concern is to emancipate the animal kingdom from man's yolk of oppression.

It doesn't account for the fact that it was voluntarily abolishing slavery that would have handed such an advantage to competitors in the first instance.

Even generously assuming it was the sole motive it still resulted in a great service to humanity.

Sorry mate I've run out of rep, so you'll have to settle for a golf clap for skinning this thread alive and wearing it's pelt as a Davy Crockett type hat.
