Because their styleof games are completely different. Smith plays up top with his back to goal and holds the ball up. Rooney drops off from a main striker, drifts into space deep or wide and runs at players. It is a totally different role.

see the confusion comes in because rooney has played in so many different roles and can do them all in the same game, he is better playing deep and holding it up for someone like saha. just like smith is. you dont have someone at the top who holds the ball up, that is just bizarre, the person deep holds it up.
