United's improved performance had a lot to do with Chelsea having a complete lack of desire to get involved.

United's improved performance was because the team, who had downed tools and were widely expected to do the same in this game to finish their job of getting rid of van gaal, didn't follow through and lie down. That expectation is what lead to people's reaction to the performance. The change of heart from the players, and the change in tone from scholes and Rio on tv, suggests something's gone on.
