Looking at the football City, Liverpool and even Chelsea play, we won’t be getting anywhere near them. Compared to them we look like we play in slow motion.

Fergie barely did anything day to day during his last 15 years in charge other than oversee things. 90% of it is to manage a group of people. Other aspects would be things like setting the Framework for the team, instructing the coaches, buying and selling players etc. Individuals getting better is down to player and coach, and most should be done by the age of 23 or so. The most a manager would usually do is tell the player or coach what to work on, and that would mostly be with the younger, still developing players. You train, set the framework for the players to operate within, issue general tactical instructions for the match, and then it’s up to the players to play football together and work things out. A manager doesn’t micro-manage the game. That’s the players.

Most international players of a certain age would take offence if someone tried to teach them something, which is why united never worked on various things under Fergie. It was assumed that being professionals of a certain age, and being good enough to be at united in the first place, they they could already do it. See ferdinand’s reaction to moyes telling him how to defend. A manager loses the dressing room with such an attitude. Same with van gaal issuing his detailed instructions and analysis by email after each match, which most players supposedly ignored.

Although Woodward is redefining the role as someone who babysits and molly coddles his assets whilst they do what they want. In which case it is just scribbling down names on paper and giving interviews. And taking the blame.

Caught Guardiola bein interviewed yesterday. Asked with someone like Aguero do they just leave him to get on with it? Looked bemused at the question, with the upshot being they work with him and all other players every day to look to improve them.

Looks like pep still a bit wet behind the ears compared to Jammy

No such thing as coaching in first team football according to Jammy
It’s all rest and recuperation in advance of the next game

Guardiola is different to fergie, mourinho and most of the others. More hands on during training, like a coach. Though I don’t think he’s teaching him how to pass or shoot, like some idiots seem to expect. Not that he particular stated he was the one looking to improve them. Could just as easily be instructing his coaches. But he probably does take a more active role along with them, based on what was shown of him at Bayern.

I didn’t say that. I said it’s not the manager’s job to coach the players. And it is mostly rest, recuperation and prep for the next match, as has been stated many times by various managers in England. Maybe guardiola has found another way

Great save from Patricio first half, two decent saves by DeGea.

Shaw was good. Delighted Fred got taken off early. Also happy to see Valencia in rather than Dalot as I knew Jota would get at him.

Utd seemed to run out of ideas once we conceded the ball for the last 20 minutes. We're a decent team with a good manager, but that defence you couldn't break down contained Matt Doherty, Ryan Bennett and Connor Coady - they're Championship players. Well coached, but they're still gonna prefer defending against hopeful balls in the box than slick passing (as proven by the goal you scored).
We can't get away with playing so many average players against a decent side like Wolves.

Smalling. Valencia. Lindelof. Fellaini. Lingard.

That's half a team. Add Sanchez and Lukaku playing poorly and it's likely to be a struggle.
