Mcgrath was going nowhere at OT, his career was in jeopordy, He got a wake up call when sold, to be fair to him he performed well for Villa and Ireland, but he never realised his true potential through injuries in his early career at United before he even got in the team.

I would go as far as to say he never ever got anywhere near his true potential. Which is a shame, but he didn't help himself with his drinking so it's his own fault.

His transfer fee of £450000 probably says a lot about what was felt at the time. Pallister was £2.3 million. Buying Mcgrath even at that knockdown price was considered a gamble, one which did pay off, but it doesn't reflect that he was at his peak as you seem to think
