personally I don't think our defence is that much of an issue, id say its our attacking style....
if we score 3 goals yesterday, 3-1 isn't a bad result at all. city conceded the other day but the front of their team was what won the game.
thats fine as I don't want our defence being what worries other teams.
jones and smelling are as good if not better than stones and otamendi.
city defence is there attack as they keep teams under constant pressure by attacking and chasing the ball down.

Having defenders who are shit on the ball does effect your build up play and how quickly you can get the ball transitioned from defence to attack
Clearly not the only issue as to why we struggle to create clear cut chances as we need some better coaching to give structure to our attacking play however all top sides now have 11 players who are comfortable receiving and passing the ball
We generally field defenders who see the ball as a hand grenade
Even if we get top class full backs (and potentially Shaw could be one) Jose has to get them overlapping constantly
His tactic of conservative full back play is so out dated
