But as an aside, unrelated to all that: how about an appreciation of the sublime football Alessandro Nesta has produced over the last decade. What a simply fantastic player. So smart and calm, good on the ball, hard in the challenge but rarely mad, and still quick, like when he closed the distance and turned Wayne's shot over the bar early on.

Wish he'd come our way years ago.

Fantastic player. Got almost everything you could want in a centre back. Great reader of the game, phenomenal pace, excellent positional sense, good technical ability and a strong tackler too. When he's at the top of his game he's just a joy to watch.

Not quite in the Baresi/Maldini/Scirea/Fachetti bracket for me, primarily because he's not been as consistent as the aforementioned players, but certainly one of the best defenders of the past decade or so.

Excellent defender.

Ferdinand is better though.
