Am I hearing things or did Phil "get your nostrils off the pitch" Thompson just call John O'Shea a paddy?

If so, is that not as bad as the joke Rodney Marsh got sacked for?

Not really. Paddy isn't a name adopted by slave masters to reaffirm their belief that the 'n' is non-human.

Incorrect. It was (still is by morons) used by those who regard themselves as masters that they see all Irish as subservient, therefore all called the same derogatory term.

In the context of a presenter on a nationally televised programme in 2010 using it, it is just as unacceptable. (see Ron Atkinson)
