New Wolfsburg coach Steve McClaren has vowed to get to grips with the German language and culture as he prepares to take charge of the Bundesliga club next season.

The former England and FC Twente coach has agreed to take over at the helm of the 2009 Bundesliga champions from July 1 and he has promised to do all he can to take them back to the top of the table.

"Of course I will try to learn German," said the 49-year-old. "In addition, I would like to enjoy the German culture outside of football.

"I am really looking forward to gaining experience in Germany and I would like to take in all of the history, tradition and culture of German football."

McClaren arrives at the Wolves after they endured a difficult season following their extraordinary Bundesliga title triumph.

Armin Veh was dismissed after little over half of the campaign while Lorenz-Gunther Kostner took over to lead them to the quarter-finals of the Europa League and to a relatively satisfactory eighth-place finish, given the troubles they had earlier in the season.

But McClaren sees a lot of potential in the club and is aiming to restore them to the top.

"I am coming to Wolfsburg because they have a lot of ambition and the means for success," he told the Wolfsburger Allgemeine Zeitung newspaper.

"An important reason for my decision were the decision makers. I took to (managing director) Dieter Hoeness and (chairman) Francisco Garcia Sanz immediately.

"Both want the best for Wolfsburg and if we can transmit this attitude to the team, then we will be successful.

"I know that this team has some fantastic individual players, but you can only be really successful as a team. Otherwise, you don't achieve anything.

"I think that the team knows this in view of playing a better season next year."
