Default the case for smalling

since sunderland seems to have come on in games and just needs to cut out the one error in a game he always seems capable of . I feel there is a good player in there bursting to come out actually starting to bring the ball out quickly and looks totally different to the one id have gladly strangled after the city game in November . hopefully whatever is taking place at Carrington in training the penny appears to have finally dropped

I think given hes been here five years and has a good number of England caps we know all this.

This £#%&!er was at Middlesbrough and got homesick and too often he seems like a bit of a lightweight @#%&!. Yesterday was better and he needs to dominate more experienced forwards than Harry Kane on a regular basis.

He'll be out the team as soon as we buy someone better. Feel free to bump this post in 6 months.

Thanks

I think we will bring in 1 top right sided CB as we are now ok left side with rojo, blind and shaw so one of the following will have to go(maybe 2)

Evans
Jones
Smalling

And more than likely in that order so smalling should be good for a year or 2 yet while other areas of the team are worked on this summer

I wouldn't underestimate his keeping Kane quiet - the £#%&!er's been on fire, although his supply was stifled by our sparkling mf

I have been impressed with his reaction to the red card at City. Could easily have fallen away after that, was on the end of a lot of criticism, but he responded admirably, probably been our best defender this season.

This is the first season in his Utd career where he has been used exclusively at CB. It has improved him, always been a excellent one v one defender, his positional play and reading of the game has been the issue.

Did well yesterday, strode out of defence a couple of time, his passing though

seriously? a thread about how smalling is actually quite good?

seriously?

he wasn't exactly distracted by spurs flooding forward, though.

aye, Smallers' passing was sometimes dodgy but did occasionally show a bit of shexshy footwork. Developing.

A few shit@#%&!s looking good but Tone...... :shakehead: back to sq one when he has to stop to pass back with his rf across an area he's just £#%&!ing skinned a defender. Hope the big man can make something of Rafael if he can stay fit for more than 3 games.

Jones? Has his moments but most of em are £#%&!ing worrying. New cb reqd.

Young has often been our best threat as well as getting us out of the shit when needed. Credit where due.

wasn't long ago you were hailing him as the best thing since Kaiser Franz.

he has been our best defender for some time. the idea that we need a "case for smalling" thread from pure after one less than pressured performance is ridiculous (clearly bored with just relying on his "where are the van gaal sackers now?" stupidity). look out for "van has rejuvenated rooney by switching him to striker".

he'll do, as long as he has a talker/shouter by his side to stop him nodding off

when he played with blackett and mcnair, he was the shouter and marshal. rojo is fine paired with him. will be helped by quick and trustworthy fullbacks and a proper midfield shield.

Let's be realistic, he can defend one on ones, positioning still suspect, and still awful with the ball, tried to come at a few times yesterday, bursting through then stopping, having a panic attack and over hitting a pass to a man 5 yards behind him.

Squad player after this summer will be acceptable

Thumbs up

I like Smalling, his confidence looked utterly shot earlier in the season, but he's battled on and is looking miles better now. Gets a bit excitable with his passing, that through ball when he'd carried it to within 30 yards of goal was hilarious but he's trying, and you can't ask much more than that.

he and jones should have been learning to play centre back in a settled and successful team. instead of which, they been moved around, left out, unprotected.... they are still young, though.

smalling's distribution is poor, obviously. not sure we need him to be penetrating the opposition box in open play.

Defensively he has improved, no question. His distribution however is awful, and I think that's a very important attribute in Van Gaal's mind. You can see what he likes about it too. Most of the time when a centre back brings it out, no one on the opposition even tries to tackle them for thirty yards. Used correctly it can be extremely effective.
