He played in a team way ahead of all others at the time so it could be argued he was overrated

Great afternoon before the Internet had really taken off. Nobody saw it coming when it was announced.

Hadnt scored for 10 games for Newcastle, when we signed him, didnt score for about the first 8 for us.

He got a load of stick, loads of reds didnt fancy him. He really showed balls and dug in, on of my favourite players tbh.

We were way ahead in 96/97 99/00 and 00/01. But why doesn't that make Beckham, Neville and Ole overrated too?

And the Shearer comparison is a straw man. Shearer wasn't as good as Ronaldo Lima.

Picked up after school by my dad and it was the first thing on the radio. All the talk had been about Collymore so when the story began with a massive day for Manchester United that was what I expected. Giddy euphoria.

Loved Andy Cole, came as an out and out poacher, transformed into one of the first of the modern day all round CF's, an influential player in some ways in how the fashions moved away from one dimensional goalscorers. Cole could play with any partner(bar Eric) had great movement and was extremely unselfish. He also had a very satisfying narrative arc to his Utd career, started slowly, takes a lot of the blame for that title loss to Blackburn, then injuries, becoming a figure of fun for the ABU population, the press constantly linking players he would be replaced by, then the comeback, when he proved all his doubters wrong

Yeah I remember that. I was over the moon when we signed him. The best thing about the 9-0 was him scoring. Felt i could shove that in the naysayers faces.

Cole and Yorke - One of the deadliest strike partnerships of all time at United.

We did lose Keith Gillespie in the deal, so every silver lining has a cloud. 😂
