Ezequiel Garay's spectacular form at Benfica has caught the eye of Manchester United. With Alex Ferguson having kept close tabs on the Argentine, the English club is on the verge of reaching an agreement with Benfica to sign the centre-back for next season.

If the move goes through, the former Real Madrid defender would step into the shoes of Rio Ferdinand, who is expected to leave Manchester United in June after 11 seasons at Old Trafford under the tutelage of Sir Alex.

Benfica has whacked a €30 million price tag on the centre-back, but United has offered only half that amount. This financial give-and-take between the two parties is the only stumbling block that could scupper a shock deal that MARCA can exclusively reveal is in the pipeline. A clause in the Argentine's contract means that Real Madrid would be due a percentage of the fee from any move.

Long tipped for big things, Garay has been a standout performer at Benfica, where he has finally begun to fully tap into his talent, including starring displays earlier this season against Barcelona in the Champions League.

Can't believe Fergie would sign another Argie after the shithouses we've had in the past.

If we sign him, is it the end for Rio and Vidic? I mean, we've got Smalling, Jones and Evans there, they'd surely be expecting to feature regularly sooner rather than later?

How has he become such a big part of our club? I know he was important for the Ronaldo deal but what else good has he done for us?

We heavily overpaid for DDG and the less said about the rest the better.

We'll be back in Portugal this summer defo, Hames and Garay for a combined £50m with half of it finding its way in the pocket of Mendes somehow. :shakehead:

Don't know what all the fuss is about ?! ..we've not had that much luck with Garays previously.

Birtles springs to mind and Bailey was nothing to write home about.

Benfica centre half. Played against us last year.
