Difference.
Not really the full story. United are rich because they had a worldwide fanbase already in existence, which was leveraged through the success of the 90s and rising commercialism.

Liverpool or Arsenal would've benefited too but Fergie winning trophies brought the crowds back in.

Great football under Tommy Doc and the promise of trophies saw crowds picking up.
Given United had bigger crowds than city whilst playing at Maine road after the war, it wasn't even success. Just playing good football whilst challenging.

As for United success bringing the crowds back in during the 90's, United always had the highest crowds, but for 2 seasons, 1 of which was development work and a reduced capacity. Italia 90 and footballs increasing popularity increased the crowds across the board.

Although a great United team was always going to re-energise the old Trafford support and put 20, 000 on top of 80s figures.

You should have seen the Tripoli to London flight once the seat belts sign went off.

Libyans used to get absolutely hammered - knocking back the shorts :-)

sanitisation of the sport in england is the main thing that's driven the current boom imo... united could easily 'fill' 100k for the top games, and most other games as well if it gets back in the groove at the top...

the reason is because the support base is far more fluid and virtually nobody would be worried about going the game, virtually nobody worried about taking their family...

easy to say this or that was always going to happen, but we're at a point now where attendances still hold, profits still grow, exposure is still growing - this is absolutely the opposite of what was "always going to happen" just 10 years ago according to those who shout the loudest and think they "always know" what united is about.

Loved that quote after the game on Saturday. Asked will he be speaking to the relevant players regarding the incident.. ''I will be speaking to them to say well done, they were excellent''
He didn't just condone it, he celebrated it ffs. And it doesn't get mentioned at all. Can you imagine if Jose had said similar He would have been vilified till pancake day.
