I've criticised him a lot over the last couple of years but in hindsight some of it was %@#$&!s

He's going to be United and England's top scorer ever. Not exactly shit is it.

He's not been as good Messi and Ronaldo (I thought he'd end up being as good as them when he was 18/19) but he's had a bloody good career, both in terms of goals scored and trophies won.

He's also regularly scored against Arsenal, Chelsea, City, Liverpool etc not just against shite

Have never been a Rooney hater despite him often being frustrating as £#%&! in the last few years.

Am delighted he is now doing well

Disagree completely, in as much as he won't beat shearer due to bad seasons. The two seasons he mainly been played as the main striker his record is just as good as Shearer really (2009/10, 2011/12) He won't beat Shearer because he's barely been the main striker from Ruud early on, then Ronaldo, then Berbs for a season, then RVP etc. I think he would've beaten him, maybe already, if he'd had that lead striker role. I'm glad he didn't because it's largely benefitted the team overall. He has had average seasons though. 2009/10 he was superb though after Ronnie left, and only injury to him probably stopped us from winning the league and maybe making a champions league final.

His ability as a goalscorer is pretty damn good though and he really seems on top of it at the moment. I thought both the goals against Arsenal and Liverpool were really really cool, so many other players wouldn't have had the composure.

I'd have been really happy to see him go in that final year of Fergie, and all that contract shit still annoys me a bit, but I'm really glad we've still got him, playing out of his skin

Prime keane and scholes would wreck gerrard and viera.

Keanes positioning was a little out but gerrard was all over the shop as noted by Benitez .

Scholes was the most talented central midfield player in the premier league by a distance.

Fabregas is very talented but less than scholes.

Watch the beginning his passing against arsenal in the cup a few years ago.

I will hold my hands up and say that I wasn't happy with his form and performances in recent years, and I thought he was on a downward spiral, leaving his peak in 2008. I also felt he was the wrong choice for captain after his red card for kicking out earlier this season, and his %@#$&!ing of some of the younger players following his own £#%&!-up at Leicester.

However, he's been brilliant over the last few weeks, and seems to be maturing into a good leader. This is currently the best I've seen him play since 2010. He must be doing some serious hard graft on the training ground, and has risen to the challenge of having players like Mata, Van Persie and Falcao competing with him for a place in the side. Fair play to him, and it's vvg2c.

There was a game against CSKA away in which scholes out in one of the most amazing performances I think I've ever seen, every touch of his was perfect and if it had been on a bigger stage than a champions league group match it would have won awards.

Another 13 this season, which, ok is a bit of a push, and then he needs 60 to level it. No reason why not whilst LVG is here. Probably do it by the time he's 33. Wouldn't be surprised to see him step down to mid table in order to do it if necessary. Top United, England and prem.

Fairly decent from Barton tbf - not quite sure what the formation would be though. Probably wouldn't have Giggs in it (although depends on whether we are talking about greatest players, or best based on ability) Don't think that side would take much shit from anyone.

would it be right to say Rooney is playing well in midfield while Mata is making things tick and getting assists in the "no.10" they both want to play?

There have been a fair few of us, over the years, saying that they wanted Rooney to take on a role as a midfielder, but I honestly thought it would never happen because his passing and control had been so inconsistent, that at time it felt unreal. Am very glad to see him finally starting to get it right, and really, really want him to stay there from now on. Was it a 91% completion rate on Boxing day, including some lovely sprayed balls (arf). IF he continues in that form, we'll have a truly great attacking central midfielder: passing, goals, energy and hard as £#%&!ing nails. He could be like a Robson and Scholes rolled into one, and £#%&! me have we needed goals from midfield for a long time....

He shouldnt play midfield away from home. Enough is enough. It works at home with the extra space he can walk into with usually defensive sides focusing on Rvp and Falcao.
