Basically it could look like it was an ethnic thing, and while there's something to that, it was more down to two groups acting Billy Big %@#$&!s and not wanting to back down.

Both the main groups behind it all have been disbanded anyway - Tigris Mystic, of the Auteil end (mainly left-wing and multi-ethnic) and Boulogne Boys of the Boulogne end (all-white but insisted they were non-political - nationalist groups that tried to infiltrate them but failed).

TM disbanded 'cos the conflict dragged on too much (there was begrudging respect that they stood for so long). BB were forced to disband by the Interior Minister no less, after an offensive banner at the French Cup final was deemed a step too far.

Edit - fans from either end still fight to this day, though. Away end getting split up be police at Lille in January

I chatted to a paris fan about it last year while i was on holiday, him and his mates stand on the Kop of Boulogne and told me that at all away games they are segregated to prevent massive fights that have happened, sounded pretty mental, .

After that Lille incident paris fans were banned from away games for the rest of the season. In Febuary a Boulogne member died after being attacked by members of the Auteil, after that all their main groups from both sides were disbanded by the Interior Minister.
Also i remember hearing that when they played at citeh there was a massive brawl on the concourse between KOB V Auteil V GMP.

This is that banner, the Boulogne Boys displayed against Lens, which lead to them getting banned.
