Liverpool are in trouble - Analysis

A brief analysis, rather.

Hello, everyone.

I took a look at the different possible scenarios that could unfold in the remaining 2 Match Days of Group C of the 2018/2019 UEFA Champions League (a tightly competitive one, as you may already know) and tried to ascertain the team that stood the greatest chance to be the odd one out (that is, between PSG, Napoli, & Liverpool).

Not only have I come to the conclusion that it is, indeed, Liverpool, but that their situation is relatively dire.

There are two reasons for this, so I will jump right into it, then.

1. Remaining Schedule

Liverpool's last 2 games in the Group are against the two toughest sides and in the worst possible venue combination. PSG away and Napoli home.

Since UCL games are arranged with every Match Day alternating back and forth between home and away fixtures, it is the worst Liverpool could've hoped for in this situation, because, on paper (and this can't be stressed enough, let that be clear. Of course things are played out on the pitch), PSG is strongest opponent in the Group.

2. They almost certainly need an Away result vs PSG

Well hold a sec, uHuangZhou, they've already beaten PSG and are more than able of doing it again.

Absolutely. However, the penultimate clash with the French club is very much a higher stakes affair than it appears on the surface.

Because on the same day, Napoli host Red Star Belgrade in a fixture they will be favored to win.

While all respect ought to be given to the Eastern European club for staying in contention with an upset 2-0 win over Liverpool yesterday, it's best to err on the side of reasonable doubt and view it as a likely victory for Napoli.

Although RSB have proved worthy of causing a stir, it's disingenuous to not make note of the fact Napoli have the luxury of a game in tow against what is the weakest team in the Group, while Liverpool's quarrels with the Serbian team are done.

Anything less than a win away to PSG puts Liverpool in a precarious situation, as they would then need to defeat Napoli at home on the final Match Day.

A loss would be possibly devastating, because then a mere victory over Napoli in and of itself, wouldn't be enough to guarantee progression.

^ That's because a victory of a 1 goal margin, specifically if Napoli scores, (i.e. 2-1, 3-2, 4-3) would see the Italian team through on the head to head away goals rule. They only 1 goal margin that suits Liverpool is 1-0, provided they finish with an overall higher goal difference than Napoli does (which, keep in mind, is unlikely in the event Napoli beats RSB and Liverpool draws PSG, because Liverpool is right now only +1 over Napoli on goal difference).

Side note - Napoli has conceded the least amount of goals in this Group, thus far, which could hint at a vigilant defense.

A draw for Liverpool away to PSG and a Napoli win over Red Star would put PSG in third in Group C, but with PSG still to play RS.

(Sort of) a conclusion - We could be looking at a reality that Liverpool will need to the full 6 pts. vs PSG to advance from the first round.
TL;DR - They need to win in Paris

I'm just hoping that these last few weeks we're starting to see the results of them not being able to maintain their ridiculous high press when they're playing 2 games a week. They always start off like a house on fire but once the games start coming thick and fast they just can't maintain that way of playing consistently.

Maybe the assistant manager who quit telling Klopp to £#%&! off and die was the real brains behind it all.

Klopp in October 2015:

"If I sit here in four years, I am pretty confident we will have one title,"
Time is running out.
