David Moyes has revealed he once applied to register an Everton reserve team to play in the Conference in an attempt to enhance the development of the club's young players.

Moyes said: "Four or five years ago I tried to put an Everton reserve team into the Conference because it would have been better football for them. My plan was to use Widnes's stadium as the home ground and that when Everton were playing away the B team would have played in the Conference there. I thought the games would have been better, more competitive and more realistic for the players. But we would have had to have gone into division nine of the North-west Outer Counties League or whatever you want to call it and it would have taken 10 or 11 years to get through."

I don't think they're allowed. Conflict of interest. Weren't there rumours United inquired after buying a share in Oldham Athletic but the FA put the kybosh on it?

"Hello, Forest. I know you've existed for longer than almost everyone else, and there's only a couple of clubs that have a better record in Europe than you... but we're gonna need your league place so that the Nigerian we just stole from a French club can play some better games. What? Well, no, he can't go on loan, because... sorry, you're breaking up, can't hear you. Good luck at Crawley. Bye!"

Manchester Celtic. Or so it should have been.

John Henry Davies became the club president, and on 24 April 1902, given that the team now had few ties with its origins; it was no longer based in Newton Heath, the new owners renamed the club Manchester United Football Club, after considering the alternate names "Manchester Celtic" and "Manchester Central". They also changed the team's colours to red and white.

Thumbs down

are people really advocating closing down football clubs that have been part of their community for 100+ years on the off-chance that it might help the top clubs slightly?

it would be win win for everyone, these shitty little run down clubs that have a handful of fans get good young players and more than likely promotion & glory etc.

no ones saying do a wimbledon/mk dons to them
