I can still re-call the back page of the Mirror declaring our "coup" in signing him.

In retrospect, I guess it should have been first indications that Keane's judgement when it came to buying players wasn't all that it should have been.

Amazingly, have to agree with Senor Calafate here. 2003 was our worst summer for transfer dealings in many a year. Beckham and Veron out, DJ, Kleb, Howard, Ronaldo and Miller in. Whoever persuaded Ronnie to sign amid that mess deserves a medal.

Keane recommended that United sign him.

Said he was one of the best players he had played with if I remember rightly.

Now he's got rid of him.

Something not quite right there I'd say.

He was nearly 23 when we signed him,and had just made his mark in the Celtic side. Injuries had slowed him down, but he had also been loaned out.

A top player will break into a side before he is 21, at the latest, in Scotland a genuine talent would be evident at 18/19.

Bizaare signing, at least Kleberson had some pedigree and ability.

Kleberson did OK in a few games and was nowhere near as shite as Miller and Mumbo Jumbo....it's hard not to feel sorry for Kleberson, he was only bought to keep Ronal£#%&!indinho company

Maybe Keane had his eye on a centre mid slot at Celtic

His MUTV rant was also hyped out of all proportion, with people adding names in the frame of shame willy nilly to fit their own arguments.

No idea why United signed Miller tbh other than that he was free and had showed some promise. I believe Ferguson was disillusioned with the failure of megabucks Veron and tried to gel some lesser lights instead. Kleberson was unlucky, though his background was poorly checked out. Howard was a successful signing until he suddenly bottled it following the home game with Porto. Ronaldo was never in doubt, much to the chagrin of the anti-Ferguson agenda of the time. Djemba started well enough, and seemed to offer Keane some cover. But it soon became undeniable that he wasn't going to be up to the task; United does that to some players.

The transfer dealings of 2003 certainly did set United back. Instead of playing like champions the following season we were suddenly going backwards. Arsenal weren't actually that good, drawing over a third of their games* despite the invincibles %@#$&!s. And evidence of just how far we'd fallen came in the summer of 2004: we signed Alan £#%&!ing Smith.

*edit: okay then, they drew 12
