Red face PC/Techy type help req'd ( it's v slow ) for a man whose solution to all PC/Techy type problems...

..is to switch the PC "OFF" and then "ON" again.

It's old ( about 6 or 7 years old ) and I'm operating Windows Millenium, however, this was perfectly fine until about 2 or 3 months ago. Now it's become infuriatingly slow.. I've cleared as much crap out as I can out, I run Avast Ad Aware every now and then..

Any suggestions on how to speed it up ?

Do I need to run a virus checker ? ( if so can you recommend a decent free one to download )

I know it's old, but it was perfectly fine for me up a few months ago.

Any helpful suggestions that don't involve buying a new one ( or indeed, ideally don't involve spending any money at all ), would be gratefully appreciated.

Many thanks kind people.
F.

So what did you install a few months ago to make it slow?

Look at your task manager and see which processes / applications are taking the most memory or CPU cycles. That may give you an idea.

try using system mechanic, cleans up a lot of the crap that makes a pc go slow.
