Default United vs Milan, friendly 1988

Just pinched this from RI, first time I've seen any highlights of that game

Overriding memory is Gullit refusing to wave to the Stretford End, the miserable £#%&!er.

State of our pitch.

The scoreline was misleading, they took a load of players off and I left with five mins left. That's when we got our goals.

My main regret from that night is never getting to see Van Basten play in the flesh- then it turns out he did play! Absolutely no memory of Van Basten playing that night.

Nice job by the scouse @#%&!s getting us banned for five years.

I remember their second goal. Though I'd forgotten in til I just saw that. Great FK at the end.

Nowhere near as misleading as our 1-0 win over Red Star

Good enough to beat Barcelona deservedly, but bad enough to get utterly outclassed for most of the game at home to RSB 6 months later - and that Barcelona team went on to cheat its way past Sampdoria and win the last ever European Cup :shakehead:

I was in the scoreboard end for that game, my over riding memory was that it pissed down.

And a variety of songs about his hair being a wig. Maybe he took it badly.

To think that we actually finished 2nd in the league that season

Goes to show how shite English football was at that time

And the vermin still go on about their 1987 / 88 side as if it was one of the greatest football teams ever. They were a very good side but in a hopelessly mediocre league

The fact that they believe they would have won at least a couple more European Cups is pretty fanciful with that Milan side around at that time along with the great Madrid and Red Star teams of that era

tbf I think they would have won it that season if they'd been in it.

Barnes and Beardsley were virtually unplayable - except by United

That team won its last five games and went unbeaten in its last ten.

I was pretty young but as I remember no-one ever seriously thought they could win the league that year and that team isn't remembered particularly fondly, unlike a certain other team that finished runners-up not too long ago.
