Sepp Blatter: Russia 2018 World Cup 'agreed before vote'

Suspended Fifa president Sepp Blatter has suggested there was an agreement in place for Russia to host the 2018 World Cup - before the vote took place.

The 79-year-old told Russian news agency Tass of a "discussion" in 2010 around future World Cups.

He also said a late swing in the voting towards Qatar undid a similar agreement to give the 2022 World Cup to the USA.
The Swiss is serving a 90-day ban alongside Uefa chief Michel Platini. Both men deny any wrongdoing.

Asked about whether it was a mistake to award the 2018 and 2022 tournaments simultaneously, Blatter replied: "It was agreed that we go to Russia because it's never been in Russia, eastern Europe, and for 2022 we go back to America.

"And so we will have the World Cup in the two biggest political powers."
More follows.

BBC about 4 hours behind the rest of the web...

In 2010 we had a discussion of the World Cup and then we went to a double decision. For the World Cups it was agreed that we go to Russia because it’s never been in Russia, eastern Europe, and for 2022 we go back to America. And so we will have the World Cup in the two biggest political powers.

“And everything was good until the moment when (French president Nicolas) Sarkozy came in a meeting with the crown prince of Qatar, who is now the ruler of Qatar. And at a lunch afterwards with Mr Platini he said it would be good to go to Qatar. And this has changed all pattern.

“There was an election by secret ballot. Four votes from Europe went away from the USA and so the result was 14 to eight. If you put the four votes, it would have been 12 to 10. If the USA was given the World Cup, we would only speak about the wonderful World Cup 2018 in Russia and we would not speak about any problems at FIFA.”

It seems even Blatter had the nous to realise giving 2022 to Qatar would be such a monumental act of piss taking it would actually get the usually dumb trusting hacks asking questions

Not so Platini, the total wazzock.

£#%&!ing Bladder and his hatred of English football

He wanted it to go to the USA who only had it in 1994 :shakehead:

If it was up to him the whole world could hold it twice before he gave it to the country that invented the £#%&!ing game and on top of that could host it tomorrow with our infrastructure
And the English league is watched by more people than any other worldwide

Yet for some reason he despises everything about it

In fairness it sounds like the English bid was extremely amateurish.. That #@&%! Andy Anson was head of the bid which explains a lot.

We don't need to £#%&!ing bid for it. It's obvious to anyone who has any involvement in football that England could host a World Cup tomorrow. The reason we haven't had it is because no one in FIFA can make anything (cash, influence, etc) out of awarding it to the country most obviously able to stage it.
