Default Balon d’Or

Messi wins it for the 8th time…

Was scrolling through the list of previous winners and, peeking out through all the fantastic footballers who have won, is Michael Owen’s name is there in 2001.

Anyway well done Lionel… enjoy it, it’s your last.

They combined the old European footballer of the year award and the world player of the year award, so it’s not quite the Balon D’or of today*

It's for the good of Football that the Norwegian Heskey didn't win.

He's a @#%&!, but it's criminal Fernandes hasn't been in contention while at United.

Ok I'll take the L. In my defence 2020/2021 was a fever dream.

Totally devalued nonsense. Messi isn't the best player in the world by a long way.

The whole Ballon d'Or thing is just Americanised-style bullshit designed to be another channel to commercialise the sport for profit nowadays. 30 years ago it was a fringe award, presented with very little fanfare, but now its got a whole ceremony dedicated to it, with a global audience; it's all very odd, and has been turned into a monster through the tiresome Ronaldo v Messi debate.

Messi's wins in 2021 and 2023 undermine its true legitimacy IMO. He clearly wasn't the best player in the world in those years, yet walked away with the trophy. Strong argument to suggest him and his Barcelona cronies also robbed Wesley Sneijder in 2010.

Take away those 3 wins, and he'd be on the same number of Ballon d'Ors as Ronaldo, which is probably a true reflection of their rivalry over the last couple of decades.

Bet Ronnie was spitting feathers last night.

Has Messi not this based on his WC exploits?

He was instrumental tbf, it just feels like an age ago. Hard to see past Haaland in reality, but Keano got robbed of any award in 1999 (Ginola ffs) so £#%&! them.
