Default The European Super League is coming...

http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/35535729

Changes to the champions league to prevent a breakaway?

Quote:
Rummenigge, who is chief executive of Bayern Munich, told a German newspaper last month: "A super league outside of the Champions League is being born. It will either be led by Uefa or by a separate entity, because there is a limit to how much money can be made."

The ECA represents more than 200 clubs, including all the biggest ones such as Real Madrid, Barcelona, Juventus, Bayern Munich, Manchester United and Chelsea.

There have been suggestions that these clubs should get direct entry into Europe's elite club football tournament, rather than through their domestic league position the previous season.

It's a shit idea, the magic of playing Real, Barca or Juve is that you don't get to do it every year, doing it every year would be shit and I think there's a fair chance clubs may be shocked just how little interest in it there'd be, and if it dies on it's arse, are the domestic league clubs going to just roll over and let them back in?

European glamour ties are supposed to be the icing on the cake, not the whole £#%&!ing thing. So yeah, it's a shit idea.

Think it was 1985 that Irving Scholar said Spuds had more in common with Inter Milan than Coventry - 30 year later..

I can't see UEFA sanctioning it given the effect on domestic leagues.

Champions League TV deal up for renewal soon, usual bluster about ditching it to drive up the price.

they wouldn't have to if the clubs form a breakaway league.

tend to agree with sheeners' post above - familiarity breeds contempt. not a good idea.

National Associations would then take sanctions against the clubs...

On the one hand, as above I don't like the idea of playing Barca or whoever twice a year every year. Would take the buzz out of it.

On the other hand, if the likes of Rummenigge has anything to do with the formation of this thing, City won't be allowed anywhere near it

Has European football ever been in such a shit state as it is at the minute?

Germany is turning into a league that looks like it is going to be utterly dominated by 1 club. Yes, they've always been the biggest and took the better players, but it has gone a step beyond that now. I think this season will be the first time any team has won 4 consecutive titles, and you wouldn't back against them going to do 10 on the trot. The rest of the clubs in the main don't attract top players and hence will struggle to make an impact in Europe, unless Dortmund re-emerge with a quality side. None of the others have a chance.

Serie A is probably the worst it has ever been. No side outside of Juventus will be capable of doing anything in the CL.

Spain used to be a great league to watch around 12- 15 years ago, when sides like Mallorca were capable of handing Madrid a beating. Now Valencia are getting done 7 nil Majority of the top players now at two clubs, when previously these players would probably be at other clubs in Europe.

French football has been turned into a PSG oil funded load of £#%&!, with no clubs able to compete with them financially.

The Dutch and Portuguese clubs will probably never come close to winning the CL again as things currently stand.

Just a big fat stinking £#%&!ing mess. You know money has £#%&!ed the game when a club with the history of Ajax no longer have a prayer of competing.

Couldn't agree more. Especially about Spain. Used to be great in the late 90s, just before the galactico shit kicked off.

Exactly. And they usually get what they want from Uefa as a result.

Too much money staked in the Premier League. There will be no breakaway or restructuring.

This will end up with UEFA finding some kind of historical coefficient that all the biggest clubs meet, and using that as justification for their entry along with domestic qualifiers.

No one gives a £#%&! about the integrity of a competition these days, it's all about the dough. Uefa make more money when the big teams are in it anyway, so they are hardly adversaries in this.
