I believe the line was near enough how can you win the ball off us in midfield if the ball is never in midfield?

He was genuinely proud of that. You've got to respect the balls on him tbf.

Like Giggs said a while ago, bypassing midfield in the first half was always united’s tactic against Liverpool, as well as keeping the fullbacks back. It’s not a problem giving Liverpool possession when they are deep in their own half. Its giving them possession under the pressure of the press in our half where the issues are. That’s one reason they didn’t turn possession into chances.

If you think what Fergie did and what Mourinho does are even remotely alike you are sadly mistaken.

Even when we did drop off in such games Fergie would bemoan it after the match. It tended to be a natural thing the players did rather than his instructions. It's one thing keeping it tight, not over-committing etc. It's another entirely to just completely surrender your influence on the game and drop to the edge of your penalty area and invite trouble.

Arsenal away being a case in point. Fergie rope-a-doped them, nqat, but never lost the control to the point of having only 20% possession and barely being able to get out of our own area for 70 minutes by design, and being delighted with it
