It's just natural reactions born from something you train for weekly...

Technically harts was better.

Never understood why keepers punch the ball straight in front of them. If it falls at the oppositions feet they've got the whole goal to shoot at.

The save was alright.

Not sure I understand? If you punch the ball 20 yards the opposition has the whole goal to shoot at?

Beautiful save. Much more straightforward situation for him though.

No.

Keepers are shown all the time doing that save one way save the other over and over from 4ft away...

9.9 / 10 he doesn't save that...

That proves it was more luck than ability.

How can you physically accomplish something with luck rather than ability?

If it's punched either side of goal, it's probably a tougher angle to get a shot at goal at. It'd also be easier to defend.

Did you see who got the managerial job at united after Alex Ferguson....?

It was a natural reaction, a fireman overcoming a back blast to escape a building, a soldier sensing an IED, a doctor taking a gulp and calling a c section...

Experience, natural abilities and skills born out of training and a lifetime of practice...

It looks out of this world, but it's not a great save.

As for the punch....horrific.

I see what you mean. Not easy to do tho when the ball is in the centre of goal and you are in the centre of goal. You're going to punch it much farther under pressure if you go straight through it, rather than trying to twist your body and punch it at an angle. Priority is distance and height.

Agreed....I'm struggling to understand how this diminishes it? Or how it differentiates it from Hart's save, apart from Button's being far more difficult?

Fair enough. It just seems like a stupid place to punch it to when it's an area where teams attacking the box on a set piece leave a man or two. Assuming most the team are defending the set piece it would have to be some punch to clear it from danger.

David James 96 FA cup final being a prime example.

Re punching I think they should revolutionise the training...

Most blokes (the women's game could adapt) are greT with throwing a hook, you learn it from a kid, so instead of distance and height it should be angle, distance and height with a big hook.....

Try and aim to get it out wide as far as possible...

Well, you can't really think of the goal to be to completely clear the danger - that's just not going to be possible in most cases. The goal is to stop it being headed directly in, which by definition, every punch accomplishes.

Usually defenders are at the top of the box too, and the vast, vast majority of balls a keeper punches out of the box don't end up as goals.
