Default Football Skills With John Wark

Football Skills caught up with John Wark, the former Liverpool and Ipswich midfielder who earned 29 caps for Scotland.

Football Skills: Getting right to it, John, what do you think are the most important skills young players need to master?

John Wark: First touch and comfort on the ball. You've got to have that base to start with. But really, in the modern game, it's about speed and power. So I would say fitness and strength is as important as anything else.

FS: So even young players have to work on their fitness?

JW: Aye, the game is changing. If you watch Japan play, or South Korea, in my day they couldn't play football at all, but now they're in every World Cup and doing well, and it's because they're so fit.

FS: Yes, they're greatly improved.

JW: And it's not because they're brilliant footballers; it's because they're so fit. Also, there is a level of craftiness there. Cunning. You've got to give them credit.

FS: Yes, they-

JW: Scheming. Devious.

FS: Now, what about shooting with the weaker foot? Should young players be working on that?

JW: Just zipping all over the place. Like rats in a rundown flat, when you switch the light on.

FS: Ah, well-

JW: They just love to run. You can tell, with those big stupid grins stuck to their faces, running and going "Hoy! Hoy! Chinky Hey Hoy!" or whatever.

FS: Now, you were a goalscoring midfielder-

JW: I'm getting paid for this, right?

Gypsum sitting in a room, staring at a wall, not seeing the wall, looking past the wall - looking at this afternoon, inhumanly patient, waiting for a chance to bttt the Johnny Wark anecdote.

Was thinking that - a proper kick in the stomach - something that really winds the recipient forcing them to their knees in pain with no air left in the lungs to 'cry out the pain'.

Gypers is known for not suffering fools but it's a bit harsh putting grimmers in that bracket. Or is it?

Btw I reserve the right to comment more fully on the blatant racism of the op should the bloodlust pack decide to pursue that line.
