Talk about holding a £#%&!ing grudge against somebody who you don't even know
I think the good far outweighs the bad (& then some)
That's the key: the good far outweighs the bad. I can understand a few grumbles because of the contract thing, but enough to warrant souring all that he's done for us down the years?

It doesn't all have to be about his level now either. It's a landmark goal that celebrates EVERYTHING he's done for us. All those wonderful moments. The debate about what he offers now can easily be found on any other thread on the forum.

regardless of the clip, it may be odd to say you can't stand someone you don't know, but it's no odder than saying you haven't got a bad word for someone you don't know.

personally i couldn't care less about him wanting to leave. it did make me laugh to hear all the fawning over him questioning the club's ambition after that though, when he himself was part of the problem.

anyway whatevs, another boring £#%&!ing rooney debate

he's a spectacular player at his best even now and few english players in the sky era have been able to kick a ball the way he can. good team player, very good all round attacker, brilliant finisher, liked a scrap in his hey day. if it wasn't for the lack of vision (relatively) and the sloppiness and the daft chips and the bad decision-making he'd have got very close to world class in the late 00s early 10s. plus he's been very unlucky never to have been at his best in international tournaments, where good performances could have elevated his confidence and meant he was able to lead united to success once he became the main man as scholes and giggs wound their careers down...

he deserves some blame for the managerial chaos we've had as well, seeing as he was moyes' man on the pitch, and i reckon this is proven by the fact even a stubborn old goat like van gaal was forced to accommodate the player's reputation and pamper to his ego, knowing his popularity in the dressing room. kind of shows he may not have been the team player behind the scenes that he seems on the pitch, and could be part of why fergie wanted him out. without getting too speculative, as everyone with any management experience knows, some people represent you superbly with outsiders and in their given role. but within the company their personality can become distraction, maybe even a bit divisive - some people naturally defend others and take positions they don't necessarily hold. it can be completely genuine, but can also lead you to thinking they prefer to maintain their own status amongst their peers than support the collective course taken for the sake of the big picture by the management. it can be with the very best intentions, but it can seriously undermine the operation.

saying all that, it would be great for him to be carried by the team next season to another proper title push. whether he'll want to stick around and be a bit part player now he's got the record is another matter, especially if he doesn't make the cup final team(s) this season. hopefully he will, and we see him lift another PL trophy before he quits...

Have to re-post the incredible vid that Ziggy made for Charlton. The range of his game is staggering.

Really difficult to know where to place Rooney in a Utd all time list
Probably not as high as your all time top goalscorer should be

Don't think there has ever been a clear Utd great who generates as little affection from Utd fans while still playing that Rooney does
I think that last contract he got from exploiting a desperately weak manager and then proceeding to play to a mediocre standard has caused a lot of resentment among the support

It will probably take 5 or 10 years after he has finished playing to make a proper assessment on his place in the Utd pantheon

Personally don't think he makes the top 10 but that's nothing to be ashamed of given the ridiculous quality of players we've had play for us over the years
